IGNITE 2009

RJMCEI Auditorium IIM Ahmedabad, November30 ,2009

National Innovation Foundation (NIF) organized the IGNITE-09 award function on November 30, 2009 at RJMCEI auditorium, IIM, Ahmedabad. Former President of India Bharat Ratna Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam conferred the awards to the winners. IGNITE 09 is the National Competition for students' technological ideas and innovation organised in partnership with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Navodaya Vidyala Samiti, Society for Research and Initiatives in Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) and others. The idea to organise such a competition is to bring out the hidden creativity in the children and make them think beyond their text books.

The contest, which ran from April 15, 2009 to September 15, 2009, saw participation of students from 82 districts of 21 states of the country. Over all 1344 entries were received, which ranged from sectors like energy, environment, transport, general household utility items and many even discussed societal problems. The award winners were announced on October 15 th , the birth day of children's favorite Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, celebrated as the Children's Innovation Day by NIF.


In the school section for students below class seventh Yathartha Saxena, class five student from Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand has won the first prize for his idea about triangular wheels in luggage, which would facilitate its movement over stairs while Sashmita Nayak from Kendujhar, Orissa, a class seven student, has won the second prize for her idea to have the doors of l avatories integrated with the flush system. Saihiel Bakshi, from Gurgaon, Haryana has developed a rain water harvesting umbrella, which further filters the water making it usable.

Abhishek Bhagat of Bhagalpur, Bihar, a class tenth student, has won the first prize for developing an automatic food making machine in the class eight to ten category. The second prize has been won by Anurag Rathore, Jallandhar, Punjab for his idea to integrate the gait of a person with the cell phone's security system. Ujjawal Jain of Bangalore, Karnataka has won the third prize for giving an idea about a mechanism to extend the view field of the back-view mirror.

In the higher secondary category, Sushant Pattnaik of Bhubaneshwar, Orissa has won the first prize for his innovation of a breathing sensor apparatus, which can assist differently abled in their movement and other routine tasks. Masha Nazeem of Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu has won the second prize for developing a flameless seal maker and a modified fuel dispenser for petrol pumps.

Apart from these awards there were many consolation awards also in all the three categories given by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. At the event, the Honey Bee Creativity Club of the Sri Sathya Sai Lok Seva Vidya Kendra, Alike, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka was also appreciated for promoting creativity in children. The children of the club have sent more than two hundred interesting ideas to NIF. Similarly Salwan Public School , Gurgaon whose students documented traditional knowledge practices from their elders and presented it systematically was also appreciated in the function. All practical and useful ideas/innovations may be given financial and mentoring support by NIF. In the deserving cases, patents will be filed in their name too at no cost to them. More
